Yesterday, I posted a blog on the many shows that you could watch to pass the time until this terrible pandemic is finally under control. Well theatre fans, it's time to add another one to the list. Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar. This groundbreaking musical, that first premiered on Broadway in 1971, was originally broadcast on NBC on April 1, 2018, and won five Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Special.
Starring John Legend as Jesus, Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas, and Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdelene, Jesus Christ Superstar was filmed in front of a live audience at the March Armory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Now I'm not going to lie, it has always been one of my favorite shows since I first heard the cast recording in high school. Since that time I have seen several productions over the years, including the most recent 2012 Broadway revival. What can I say? I'm a fan.
Now for those of you who did not get a chance to see the live version back in 2018, you do not want to miss it this time around theatre fans. It was amazing. As you know, Broadway is scheduled to return on April 13. That is thirteen days from now, for those of you keeping track. Sadly, I don't think Broadway will be coming back then, and probably anytime soon I'm afraid.
If I had to guess, I would say June 1, or even July 1 at the latest. Maybe I'm wrong. Trust me. If I was ever going to be wrong about anything, I wish it was this. We all do. Until that day occurs, we just need to remember to stay safe, and watch out for each other. In times like these, sometimes each other is all we have. Until next time theatre fans.
