Two of my favorite Broadway musical revivals are coming back this season and I can't wait!
First up is South Pacific, http://www.applause-tickets.com/south-pacific.asp , starring Kelly O'Hara as Ensign Nellie Forbush; A Broadway favorite, O'Hara is best known for her Tony nominated portrayals of Clara in A Light in the Piazza and Babe in The Pajama Game. Also starring:Paulo Szot as Emile de Becque, Loretta Ables Sayre as Bloody Mary, Matthew Morrison as Lt. Joseph Cable and Danny Burstein as Luther Billis.
There isn't a song in this show that isn't a classic and they all just give me the goosebumps!
South Pacific concerns the lives of U.S. military men, nurses and the residents of the Polynesian island they occupy during World War II. Nurse Nellie Forbush is "In Love With a Wonderful Guy," a French planter with small children. Clean-cut Lt. Cable has fallen hard for Bloody Mary's daughter Liat. And the seabees, sailors and marines will tell you that there is "Nothing Like a Dame." The shows gorgeous score also includes "Cockeyed Optimist," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair," "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," "Honey Bun" and "This Nearly Was Mine."
"Hold your hats,
Shout Hallelujah,
Mama's gonna show it to ya!"
Second up is my FAVORITE musical of All Time!! Gypsy
To order seats or call 800-451-9930. Starring the best Mama Rose I've ever seen (well Tyne Daly is right up there!), Patti LuPone. I saw her this summer at the City Centers incredible Encore Series. It was amazing and this promises to surpass that concert version. Some say it's too soon for another revival of this classic musical since it was just done a few years ago with Bernadette Peters (not my favorite Mama Rose, I think she was miscast and the production was just ho-hum) LuPone will blow people out of the theatre, she's that good!
It's official: The classic musical Gypsy, starring Patti LuPone as Rose and directed by Arthur Laurents, will begin performances at Broadway's St. James Theatre on March 3, 2008, and open on March 27. The production, which began life with a three-week run presented by the New York City Center Encores! series in July, will reunite LuPone with co-stars Boyd Gaines (Herbie) and Laura Benanti (Louise).
In this musical fable suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, LuPone plays the quintessential stage mother, joined by Gaines as her loyal manager/companion and Benanti as the daughter who transforms into the title character. The book is by Laurents, with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. For Me!!!
