A Tim Burton movie on Broadway? Not only that but it's going to be a musical. Big Fish, which is based on the 1998 novel by Daniel Wallace and the 2003 film is set to begin previews at the Neil Simon Theatre on September 5 with opening night scheduled for October 6. Prior to that the show will make it's world premier at Chicago's Oriental Theatre where it will run from April 2-May 5. Leading the cast is two-time Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Buz and Tony nominees Kate Baldwin and Bobby Steggert.
The show which has music and lyrics by Grammy and Tony Award nominee Andrew Lippa ( The Addamd Family) and a book by John Augsut is being directed and choreographed by five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman (The Producer's, Contact). Now with a creative team like that how can it not be a hit? I hope I didn't just jinx it. Now for those of you like me who have never seen the movie or read the book here is a synopsis of Big Fish from the shows official website.
A rollicking fantasy set in the American South," Big Fish, according to
press notes, "centers on the charismatic Edward Bloom (Butz), whose impossible
stories of his epic adventures frustrate his son Will (Steggert). As Edward’s
final chapter approaches, Will embarks on his own journey to find out who his
father really is, revealing the man behind the myth, the truth from the tall
tales."
Sounds fun don't you think? By the way not only will we be selling tickets to the Broadway production but we will also have access to the Chicago engagement as well. How many other companies do you know that offer service like that? Get your tickets to see Big Fish on Broadway this fall and in Chicago this Spring. Until next time theatre fans.
