Jersey Boys on Broadway-An Insider's Updated Review of a Great Musical

I am very lucky as I get to see just about every Broadway Show playing in New York City. This past Tuesday night, Feb 16, 2010 I was fortunate to get a rear mezzanine seat for Jersey Boys on Broadway. The last time I saw Jersey Boys on Broadway was when the show first began preview performances in October of 2005. Many readers of this article might remember that Jersey Boys on Broadway won the 2006 Best Musical Tony Award.

Jersey Boys is a terrific Broadway show in every way. It has more than 30 popular songs that were made famous by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, one of this country's most popular bands in the 1960's and 1970's. Jersey Boys on Broadway tells the very interesting story of 4 New Jersey youngsters that often hung out on the local streets of Belleville, New Jersey, while working hard to make their dreams come true of becoming a famous pop band. Although they had to spend a long time playing backup to other singers, they managed to come up with their very "own sound"eventually. The very special high pitched yet sweet vocal quality of Frankie Valli's gorgeous voice along with Bob Gaudio's unique talent for great lyrics and musical arrangements were the core of The Four Seasons music. Along with band mates Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito, The Four Seasons sold more than 100 million records during their career, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Being a Four Seasons fan as a youngster myself, it feels like these guys and The Beach Boys (my personal favorite band), seemed like virtually the only bands to continue successfully even during the invasion of The Beatles and other British bands that came to this country in 1964.

Jersey Boys on Broadway is directed by one of the greatest theatrical directors of all time- Mr. Des McAnuff. Mr. McAnuff has been involved with several Broadway shows in the past- Tommy, Big River, The Farnsworth Invention and last season's Guys and Dolls. Direction in Jersey Boys is perfect as Mr. McAnuff has each one of The Four Seasons characters tell a part of the groups story in a narration style, often with a great deal of humor included. Book for this amazing show has been written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with Lyrics by Bob Crewe. Jersey boys runs 2 and 1/2 hours and plays daily except takes Mondays off throughout the year.

Even though more than 4 years have passed since I saw Jersey Boys on Broadway the first time, this show is as fresh as it was back then. The actors do a great job and the talent on stage runs deep for sure. I can guarantee you will have an amazing time at this show and there will be times when the emotions may even get the better of you. Songs like "Ragdoll", "Sherry", "Fallen Angel", "Walk Like A Man" and "Oh What A Night" will bring you back to a special time in your life. And you'll end up feeling so great that you decided to get yourself Jersey Boys on Broadway tickets.
