The Book of Mormon
The creators of the hit television show South Park are about to shake up Broadway forever. Trey Stone and Matt parker are set to debut their first Broadway show on February 24 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre. The pair claim that the idea to make a Mormon themed Broadway show came to them naturally in the February issue of Vogue Magazine:
“Mormons are so Disney and Rodgers & Hammerstein to begin with that it makes perfect sense for them to break into song,” Parker said about targeting the religion. “That’s why, in many ways, this feels like a traditional musical. You’re being cheesy and corny and all—but that’s who Mormons naturally are.”
Parker will co-direct the show with Casey Nicholaw that follows the story of two young Mormon missionaries as they begin their journey across Uganda. The two young men are thrown far out of their Utah comfort zone when they are forced to face things like AIDS, starvation, and poverty. Their story is told alongside the founder of the Church of Latter-day Saints, Joseph Smith.
