Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury Open on Broadway on December 13, 2009

The show is called A Little Night Music and it is based on an Ingmar Bergman film called Smiles of a Summer Night. The music is by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler (from the original 1973 production) and it is the very first revival of A Little Night Music on Broadway.

A Little Night Music is about Desiree Armfeldt, an aging actress who is rekindling her romance with an older married man who becomes impatient with his constantly resistant "virginal child-bride". Additional romantic encounters take place during one weekend in the country in turn of the century Sweden.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is making her Broadway debut. She has been seen in many films that include Chicago and won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Vilma Kelly. Angela Lansbury plays the role of Madame Armfeldt in A Little Night Music. Ms. Lansbury has been acting for more than 60 years now, winning 5 Tony Awards, most recently winning the award for Blithe Spirit in 2009.

Our ticket company, Applause (License #71AP1001029), always gets complimentary tickets to see a show before its official opening. Although we are anxiously awaiting an invitation to see A Little Night Music we haven't heard any word of mouth from the preview audiences that have seen A Little Night Music. As soon as we see the show, we will write a review for our Broadway Ticket News readers.

It's been a Broadway season that has been exciting to say the least. We have seen Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig play in A Steady Rain, Jude Law in Hamlet and soon we will see Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson star in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. We are hoping that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury shine in A Little Night Music and that the show enjoys a long run on Broadway.

Cheers,
Rich Gladstone
