The Season Ahead Part Two

Earlier this week I posted a blog discussing the remaining shows set to open this season. Since then two new shows have been announced. Things pretty move fast on the Great White Way. You blink and you just might miss something. Here are the next five.

Next Fall(March 11)This new play by critically acclaimed and Off-Broadway favorite Geoffrey Naufft's is set to have it's Broadway premier this Winter at the Helen Hayes Theatre. The show which opened to favorable reviews last year is set to begin previews on February 16. Here is a brief description about the show according to a production source. "Next Fall takes a witty and provocative look at faith, commitment and unconditional love. While the play’s central story focuses on the 5-year relationship between Adam and Luke, Next Fall goes beyond a typical love story. This timely and compelling new American play forces us all to examine what it means to "believe" and what it might cost us not to." Sounds interesting to me.

Looped(March 14)This new play starring Emmy Award winner Valerie Harper tells the story of the late film star Tallulah Bankhead. The show which begins previews on February 19 at the Lyceum Theatre takes place in a sound studio in 1965 where Ms. Bankhead is trying re-record or "loop" one line of dialogue for what would turn out to be her last film,"Die, Die My Darling." Not sure what to think about this one. Ms. Harper was a great comic actress in the 70's and 80's. Playing an iconic film star is a whole different ballgame. This has the making of an hysterical night in the theatre or a train wreck of epic proportions. We will soon find out.

All About Me(March 18)This new show features one of the strangest pairings on the planet. Dame Edna and Michael Feinstein. What these two have in common is beyond me. To be honest I avoided Dame Edna the last two times she was here but there is no denying she has a following. Same with Michael Feinstein. Is there enough of an audience that wants to see them together? No idea. Let the freak show begin.

Come Fly Away(March 25) Earlier this week it was announced that Twyla Tharp's new dance musical featuring the music of Frank Sinatra is set to make it's Broadway premier this Spring. Being a big fan of Sinatra as well as a fan of Ms. Tharp's first foray on to Broadway Movin' Out I hope this is a good one. If the reviews are good expect a lot of Tony nominations in May.

Lend Me A Tenor(April 4)As I mentioned in an earlier blog today I am really looking forward to this show. It's been a long time since Broadway has had a really good slapstick comedy and I think that with the cast they have assembled the show has a good shot of being a success. We shall see.

Well there we are. Next week I will highlight the next five shows set to open this Spring. Looks like an interesting season so far. Until next time theatre fans.
