West Side Story is Back on Broadway-Applause Theater Service Has Your Seats

If you want to see an amazing Broadway Show this year, get yourself some seats for the revival of West Side Story. Starting February 23, 2009 this old-time classic show begins performances at New York's Palace Theater. Everything we hear from out-of-town performances played so far sounds fantastic.

West Side Story tells the story of the gang-ridden streets of New York City in the 1950's, taking Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet theme where we see Tony and Maria (in the Romeo and Juliet roles) portraying teenagers that are truly torn between their love for one another and the ethnic loyalty they feel each moment of their lives. Instead of Shakespeare's Capulets and Montagues, we see today's Puerto Rican Sharks fighting the Anglo Jets.

The musical score is one of the finest in the history of Broadway theater. Written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, featured songs are "Tonight", "Somewhere", "Maria", "I Have a Love" and "Something's Coming".

I remember seeing the last revival of West Side Story in 1980 at the Minskoff Theater when I was just cutting my teeth in the ticket business. The show ran about 2 years or so and some of you may remember that West Side Story launched the career of Debbie Allen who played the role of Anita in the show. She was wonderful and I hear the new cast posseses lots of talent as well. This production is directed by Arthur Laurents who wrote the original book and most recently received a Tony nomination for Gypsy in 2008.
