New York Has Some Terrific Free Outdoor Theatre In The Summer of 2016

This is a cool article I'm re-posting of some great things to do under the stars this summer in New York City.  Enjoy.

Get Your Shakespeare Fix
Taming of the Shrew_rehearsal_HR_1488.jpg

Janet McTeer and Cush Jumbo in rehearsal for the free Shakespeare in the Park production of The Taming of the Shrew (Joan Marcus )

There’s even more reason to celebrate the 400 th anniversary of the Bard’s death this summer: plenty of free, outdoor Shakespeare on offer. Kicking off the season is an all-female staging of The Taming of the Shrew. The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park returns to Central Park’s Delacorte with the innovative new production starring Janet McTeer, Cush Jumbo, Donna Lynne Champlin and Candy Buckley. With performances now underway, the golden tickets are distributed outside the theatre on the day of the show; or for the first time ever, tickets are available via the TodayTix app.
The second free outdoor Shakespeare production to be presented at the Delacorte will be Troilus and Cressida, directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan, scheduled to begin July 19, running through Aug. 14
New York Classical Theatre joins the celebrations in Central Park May 31 with their staging of A Midsummer Night’s Dream through June 26. You can also catch the show, about mischievous fairy magic and young lovers, in Battery Park until July 2, Prospect Park (July 6-10) and Carl Schurz Park (July 14-17).

Just north of Central Park in Marcus Garvey Park, The Classical Theatre of Harlem presents free performances of Macbeth in the Richard Rodgers Amphitheater, July 8-31. CHT’s unique production will be informed by Ethiopia during the time of Haile Selassie and Emperor of Ethiopia, 1916-1974; and will star Roslyn Ruff and Ty Jones as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.
Beginning June 8, head over to Brooklyn’s Carroll Park for free performances of The Tempest, presented by the award-winning Smith Street Stage. The family-friendly production sees a woman playing the traditionally male role of Prospero. Through June 26.
The Drilling Company’s Shakespeare in the Parking Lot returns for its 22 nd year with two summer productions: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (July 7-24) and The Merchant of Venice (July 28-August 14). The free performances take place in the Parking Lot behind The Clemente (Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Educational Center), located at 114 Norfolk Street in the Lower East Side.

Get Lost in Shubert Alley
Spend a truly Broadway afternoon at Stars in the AlleyThe free outdoor concert returns to Shubert Alley in Times Square June 3, hosted by Sean Hayes and Mo Rocca. The two-hour event will feature performances from more than 30 shows including The Color Purple, The Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof and Wicked.

See a Starry Concert in Queens
The New York Pops return to the Forest Hills Stadium in Queens for a concert starring Broadway favorites Matthew Morrison and Megan Hilty. The family-friendly, open-air event on July 7 will feature a 78-piece orchestra.

Go on a Scavenger Hunt
Wander through the streets of lower Manhattan with Accomplice New Yorka three-hour show that takes you with it! Up to 11 participants are transported into a theatrical story where The Boss has an important job for them – but are they cut out for a life of crime? Accomplice offers four other interactive theatre experiences including Accomplice The Village, a two-hour tour through one of the city’s most recognizable neighborhoods; Save the Big Apple, a full-day luxury expedition throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn; The Quest for the Seven Teeth, a children’s experience through Central Park; and The Quest for the Missing Slipper, a ladies night out based on the Cinderella fairy tale.

Catch a Glimpse of Broadway in Bryant Park
Beginning July 7, the most popular shows on and Off-Broadway perform their biggest hits for free on the stage in Bryant Park every Thursday between 12:30 and 1:30 PM. Like you needed another excuse to spend your lunch outdoors? Running through August 11.

Off Broadway's Hit Musical Dear Evan Hansen Plans Its Broadway Transfer For November 2016

Off Broadway's sold-out run of Dear Evan Hansen has announced that it will move to Broadway sometime in November 2016.  And this show should be another great big Broadway hit for the 2016-2017 season.

Dear Evan Hansen will complete its Off Broadway run this weekend (on May 29, 2016) at New York City's Second Stage Theater on West 43rd Street.  Stacey Mindich Productions will produce the transfer to a Shubert Theatre to be announced soon.

Dear Evan Hansen was created after a real-life death at Benj Pasek's high school more than 10 years ago.  Pasek is co-songwriter along with Justin Paul.  This terrific songwriting team wrote a beautiful score and it matches perfectly well with a book written by Steven Levenson, who is the writer for the popular cable television series Masters Of Sex.  By the way, Pasek and Paul are Tony Award and Emmy nominated songwriters as well.  Choreography is by Danny Mefford who won a Tony Award for his work in Fun Home, the Best Musical in 2015.  Michael Greif is the director of this fabulous new musical.  Mr. Greif has been nominated for three Tony Awards for his work in Rent, Next to Normal and If/Then.  All three are favorites of mine and very unique bodies of work in the theatre.

Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of the struggles of one high school student, his difficulties with his identity and fitting in and the tumult that surrounds him.  Although he feels almost invisible to the closest people in his life, when the school bully kills himself, life takes a dramatic turn for Evan Hansen as we see him evolve from loner to someone everyone wants to know.

In the current Off Broadway production of Dear Evan Hansen, featured performers are John Dossett, Laura Deyfuss, Mike Faist, Rachel Bay Jones, Kristolyn Lloyd, Will Roland and Jennifer Laura Thompson.  It'll be interesting to see if some of these cast members will be selected to play when the shows transfer to Broadway.  Stay tuned.

Dear Evan Hansen recently won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off Broadway Musical, the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Musical and two Obie Awards, one for Musical Theatre for Pasek, Paul and Levinson as well as an award given to Ben Platt for Performance.

My understanding is that Dear Evan Hansen's creative team will transfer to Broadway when the show moves.  This show has the potential to become an intensely popular show as it has very strong social messages to convey, something that is sure to ignite great interest to both younger as well as experienced theatergoers alike.

Bette Midler And David Hyde Pierce To Headline New Broadway Revival Of Hello Dolly

Hello Dolly! TicketsNow this is what I call exciting news. That's right theatre fans. One of musical theatre's most beloved shows of all time is back where it belongs. On the Great White Way. Hello Dolly, which first premiered on Broadway in 1963, is set to begin previews at the historic Shubert Theatre on March 13, 2017, with opening night scheduled for April 20.

Not only that, but it is set to star everyone's favorite diva Bette Midler as matchmaker Dolly Levi. Playing the object of her obsession is Emmy winner David Hyde Pierce. Now that is what I call perfect casting my friends. With a score by Tony winner Jerry Herman, and a book by Michael Stewart, Hello Dolly is one of Broadway's best.

Oh and did I mention, that four time Tony winner Jerry Zaks (Guys and Dolls, Sister Act) is directing the show, with choreography by Tony winner Warren Carlyle (After Midnight, She Loves Me.) It just gets better and better. Now for those of you that are not familiar with the show, here is a little synopsis about this classic musical to tell you more. Enjoy!

Set in New York City during the turn of the twentieth century, Hello Dolly tells the story of widow and professional " Meddler" Dolly Gallagher Levi. As the show begins, we are introduced to hay and feed store owner, and half-a.millionaire Horace Vandergelder, who has hired Dolly to find him a wife. Little does he know that the wife she has selected for him is herself.

While in New York, Horace leave's his two clerks, Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker in charge, who soon follow their cantankerous boss to the big city in search of adventure. Or as Cornelius put's it, "Have a good meal, spend all their money, see the stuffed whale in Barnum's museum, almost get arrested, and each kiss a girl!"

In the end, Dolly get's her man, and everyone lives happily ever after. Featuring such classic song's like, "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" " It Only Takes A Moment", "Before The Parade Passes By" and it's famous title song, Hello Dolly is one show you don't want to miss.

As of now tickets are not on sale. But rest assured when they do we will be selling them. Check back here for further updates. Get your tickets to see Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce in Hello Dolly on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre. Until next time theatre fans.

New Musical Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812 Is Now On Sale

Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812That's right theatre fans. One of the most critically acclaimed show's of the past few year's is finally making it's way to the Great White Way. Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, is set to begin preview's at the Imperial Theatre on October 18, with opening night scheduled for November 14.

Leading the cast of eighteen are Grammy winner Josh Groban as Pierre, and Denee Benton as Natasha. So what exactly is the show about? Well I'll tell you. Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 is inspired by a seventy page portion of Leo Tolstoy's epic novel War and Peace.

Set in eighteenth century Russia, prior to Napoleon's invasion, this new musical tells the story of wealthy aristocrat Pierre, who meets the newly engaged but naïve Natasha, and her supportive but scheming cousin Sasha.

While Natasha's fiancée and Pierre's best friend Andrey is off fighting for his country, Pierre looks after the two cousin's as the war continues. As the war rages on, engagements and hearts are broken as new romances begin to blossom.

Now that is one musical that I want to see. Tickets for the show went on sale today. Not only that but we sell them. Just give one of our friendly ticket experts at Applause a call and we will do the rest. It's that easy. Get your tickets to see Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre. Trust me my friends. It is one show you won't want to miss. Until next time theatre fans.

Drama League Awards Announced For Excellence in Theatre in New York City

On this past Friday May 20, 2016, the Drama League officially announced the winners of the 82nd annual awards at New York City's Marriott Marquis Hotel.  The Drama League Awards pay honor to "outstanding" work in the New York theater.
This year's outstanding production for a Broadway musical went to Hamilton, the mega-hit show that is the talk of the town (actually the talk of the world right now).  If you need tickets you may want to consider a call to my company Applause-Tickets as we have access to lots of ticket inventory.
Outstanding production of a play went to The Humans, a terrific new play which tells the story of the dysfunctions that go on in a family that travel from Pennsylvania to New York City to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with their younger daughter.  It's filled with lots of great humor but serious at the same time.  I really enjoyed The Humans on Broadway.  If you need access to The Humans tickets, my company Applause-Tickets can help with this one as well.
I thought you might want to see a list of the 82nd Annual Drama League Award nominees and winners so you'll find that just below with asterisks next to the names of the "winners".
