Audra McDonald Plays Jazz Great Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill in London
I saw Audra in this show at New York's Circle in the Square Theater in 2014. Miss McDonald won her record breaking 6th Tony Award for this show and she's the winner of Grammy and Emmy awards as well. She's a wonderful actress, a rare breed.
In Lady Day at The Emerson's Bar & Grill, Audra McDonald plays legendary jazz great Billie Holiday. The show is considered a play with music and takes place in 1959 at a small, intimate bar where we see Billie Holiday tell stories of the loves and darker moments of her life. She managed to give the crowd the performance of a lifetime its been said and it turned out to be one of the last concerts she actually ever played.
Songs included in the show are "God Bless The Child", "Crazy He Calls Me", "What A Little Moonlight Can Be", "Taint Nobody's Business" and so many others.
This wonderfully intimate theatrical experience is very special. This play with music was written by Lanie Robertson with direction by Lonny Price. Right now Lady Day at The Emerson's Bar & Grill London tickets are being sold through September 3, 2016. It only played a few months in New York City in 2014 so my guess is that this London production will see how ticket sales go for this show and then possibly decide to extend their run.
