2009 Tony Nominations: Who Will Take Home The Big Prize?

This week the Tony nominations were announced and just as I suspected there were some surprises along with some major omissions. First up. Best Musical.

Billy Elliot
Next To Normal
Rock Of Ages
Shrek

This is the first time in many years that I can honestly say that every show in this category is deserving of it's nomination. Now of course the one omission that everyone is talking about is 9 to 5. Did it deserve it? I liked the show but I think it will run regardless. It has a wide audience and is a lot of fun. Although I loved Shrek and Rock of Ages it really comes down to two shows. Billy Elliot and Next To Normal. My hope is that Normal wins but don't underestimate Billy.

Best Play

Dividing The Estate
God of Carnage
Reasons to be Pretty
33 Variations

This really is a two race between Carnage and Pretty which is one of my favorite shows of the season. Pretty needs the win more than Carnage but I have a feeling it won't win.

Best Musical Revival

Hair
Guys and Dolls
Pal Joey
West Side Story

Six months ago they were practically ready to hand the Tony Award over to West Side Story. That was before Hair opened to fabulous reviews and a big advance. Hair wins.

Best Play Revival

Joe Turner's Come and Gone
Mary Stuart
The Norman Conquests
Waiting For Godot

All four shows with the exception of Godot got rave reviews from the critics. The Norman Conquests has a lot of supporters but you can never count out Lincoln Center. This should be an interesting race. That's all for now. Next week I will be back with my predictions for Best Actor and Actress in a Play and a Musical. Until next time theatre fans.
