I was glad that I was able to see the current revival of Guys and Dolls on Broadway a few months ago when it was in previews at the Nederlander Theater in New York City. I think this new production of Guys and Dolls has a much keener and more modern feel to it while at the same time keeping the main characters true to their original makeup. Guys and Dolls tells the story of a group of "small-time gamblers" and their "gals".
This Guys and Dolls has a great cast of talented stars. They are Oliver Platt in the role of Nathan Detroit (seen in many films but most recently in Shining City and Huff on television), Lauren Graham as Miss Adelaide, a Golden Globe nominee and most recently seen in Gilmore Girls and Evan Almighty, Craig Bierko as Sky Masterson (most recently seen in The Music Man and on television for a season in Boston Legal), and Kate Jennings Grant in the role of Sarah (most recently seen in Proof). This is a truly talented group of actors and one that seems to play off one another like they've been working together for a very long time.
Guys and Dolls is fortunate to have Des McAnuff as its director. Mr. McAnuff does an amazing job with the actors and especially when it comes to the really unique staging with this version of Guys and Dolls. It has some very special and unique characteristics in the way he makes you really feel that one moment you might be in New York but the next you are transported out of the country-and it all seems to flow together really well indeed.
Guys and Dolls has a wonderful score that includes songs that everyone has heard at sometime. Some of my favorites are "Sit down, you're rockin the boat", "A bushel and a peck" and "Luck be a lady".
Guys and Dolls is what I would call an "old-time Broadway" show yet with a keen 2009 feel. One that has the very "coolest" of Broadway staging and set design and a classy "sexiness" to it. These special qualities along with terrific old-fashioned Broadway tunes and an outstanding cast are what make this Guys and Dolls a show to consider when planning a trip to Broadway.
If Guys and Dolls sounds like a show you might want to see on Broadway, right now is a great time to purchase tickets. Applause Theater Service in New York City, a locally licensed ticket agency has a special arrangement with Guys and Dolls and can get you great seats in the orchestra or front mezzanine (the best seats) for below the regular face value usually charged for Broadway tickets. The offer is valid for Tuesday through Friday performances and will probably be extended throughout the summer of 2009 in my opinion.
If you think you might want to consider seeing other Broadway shows as well, simply give the Applause ticket experts a call. You can call them seven days a week, 365 days a year locally in New York at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930.
They are a very friendly group of Broadway ticket professionals. And they love eating out at different restaurants in the theater district as well. So let them arrange your tickets and your meals. You'll be glad you did.
Enjoy the Broadway theater. It may be what we do during the day time but we really love going to shows and talking about Broadway each and every day.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone aka The Ticket Man
