What? You still haven't seen South Pacific yet? Well what are you waiting for people? Not only is it one of the most beautifully written musicals of all time but it is also one of the best shows currently running on the Great White Way. The show which first premiered on Broadway in 1949 won seven 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival as well as Beast Direction and Best Actor.I first discovered the show during my junior year in high school when our drama director chose South Pacific as our Spring production. I of course wanted to play Emile de Beque but it was not to be. Although I was the understudy. I played Stewpot. You all remember him right? Of course you don't. I barely can recall what he did and I played him. Anyway enough about me. Back to the South Pacific that matters.
I first saw the show back in March of 2008 before it opened to glowing reviews from critics and audiences alike. Even almost two years into the run the show continues to draw thousands of people each week to the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. Now that's saying something. By the way if you are not familiar with the theatre I can tell you that not only is it one of the smallest theatres on Broadway but they perform the show in the round. You know what that means don't you? There is not a bad seat in the house. How many theatres can say that? Get your tickets to see South Pacific on Broadway. It is a classic.
