Geoffrey Rush Gives the Performance of a Lifetime in "Exit the King" on Broadway!

One of the best plays that I've seen in my many years here at Applause, "Exit the King", is this years absolute must see! Geoffrey Rush gives the best performance that I've ever witnessed on a Broadway stage. As King Berenger, the Australian icon and Oscar winner (”Shine”) Geoffrey Rush gives a performance of his, yours and my lifetime. He is not only funny and theatrical to the bursting point - his king is intellectually daring and, ultimately, humanely sad.

Academy Award-winning actors Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon come to Broadway in this potently funny play about man's eternal struggle against irrelevance. King Berenger is getting old - 400 years old, to be exact - and his health is failing. His country is failing (his empire is down to six people). His marriage is failing (his first marriage already failed). But his pride is very much intact, and despite being told his time is up, the ancient ruler refuses to get off the stage without a fight. Don't miss this magnificent theatrical event that joins two of the finest actors of our time with one of the classic comic plays of all time.

You also have the extremely funny Andrea Martin(SCTV) and the lovely Laren Ambrose(Six Feet Under) co-starring with both giving wonderful performances. This is a strictly limited engagement now playing at the Ethel Barrymore theatre only through June 14th.


The production as directed by Neil Armfield is glorious. Susan Sarandon as Queen Marguerite takes a minute to get one’s attention (not her fault) and when she does, she is brilliant. The surprise is Lauren Ambrose as Queen Marie. (Yes, this king deserves two queens!) Remembered for her “Six Feet Under” role, Lauren is quite deliciously insane. These special women stand up to Rush’s unrelenting, inspiring and abnormal performance.


It's a production of such perfection and absurdity that the audience is in fear of falling out of their seats from hysterical laughing. (In a Shubert Theater where the seats are small, that’s not easy.)
