Fresh from an extremely popular run at London's Donmar Warehouse, I am pleased to report that Mary Stuart, Frederich Schiller's political drama regarding the unique relationship between England's Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots (her cousin) and rival to the throne, is in previews at New York's Broadhurst Theater on 44th Street, west of Broadway.
Mary Stuart stars Janet McTeer as Mary Queen of Scots. Ms. McTeer won Tony and Olivier Awards for her portrayal of Nora in Ibsen's classic play A Doll's House and was also nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Tumbleweeds. Harriet Walter plays the role of Elizabeth I.
Mary Stuart has a running time of 2 hours and 45 minutes. The play will show you a "behind-the scenes" look at the scheming and betrayal that went on at that time in history yet has the feel of what some say is a "modern-day thriller" of a special kind.
Mary Stuart officially opens to critics reviews on April 19, 2009. For a limited time only, the friendly folks working at the Applause Theater Service, a New York State licensed ticket agency, have access to discount tickets for "below the usual face value" through May 3, 2009. If the show opens to positive reviews as many expect, this discount may be discontinued. For now though, if you want to talk about obtaining tickets for Mary Stuart on Broadway you can contact Applause locally at 212-307-7050 or toll free at 800-451-9930.
