The last time I can remember that something powerful Off Broadway became a "hit" on Broadway was when RENT opened on Broadway on April 29, 1986. I am keeping my fingers crossed as I think it is possible for Next to Normal, a new musical drama in previews right now at New York's Booth theater-to possibly win some Tony Awards this June, maybe even for Best Musical. One never knows who will win those coveted awards in the sealed envelopes do we?
In any case, Next to Normal arrives on Broadway from sold-out runs at New York's Second Stage Theater and DC's Arena Stage with everyone in the business excited about the April 15, 2009 opening night. David Stone, producer of Wicked and Michael Grief, the former director of Rent, are handling similar responsibilities for Next to Normal.
Next to Normal has a look into how one suburban family copes with mental illness. The show does a very good job of showing the emotion that a mom, dad and their two children go through during various crises that come up over the years.
The show has a wonderful contemporary score filled with over 30 songs with excellent performances from cast members J. Robert Spencer, Alice Ripley, Aaron Tveit, Jennifer Damiano, Adam Chanler-Berat and Louis Hobson. The shows length is 2 hours and 20 minutes and includes a 15 minute intermission.
Prior to the Next to Normal April 15, 2009 opening night, we would like to remind our Applause Theater Service Broadway Ticket News blog readers that we can obtain discounted tickets of admission for you for Next to Normal before it opens. Even though it opens in a few days, there are discounted seats available through April 23, 2009. Depending upon critic's reviews of Next to Normal, the discounts will probably be extended through May of 2009 or possibly discontinued.

Personally I really enjoyed this show very much. I've seen a lot of shows and Next to Normal looks like a real "winner" to me. The subject may not be a light one but we all know there are real problems amongst all of our families as we go through life. The cast and creators of Next to Normal do a fantastic job of making us think twice about how very lucky we all are, just to be alive every day. I highly recommend all theater-goers buy tickets to Next to Normal. You'll be glad you did.
Until next time, at the theater.
Sincerely,
Rich Gladstone
