April 3,2004. My first day at Applause. Over the past five years I've seen a lot of shows. Some good. Some bad. I've also talked to hundreds of customers on the phone. Some good. Some bad. Just kidding. To be honest most of the calls we get are from some very nice people who just like us love and support the theatre. Anyway the reason for today's blog is to talk about a customer who called the other day. It was a typical day like any other. People calling to inquire about Wicked and Billy Elliot tickets.(Our two biggest sellers)When out of nowhere I got a call from a very nice lady who was looking for a show to take her daughter to for her Birthday that they both would enjoy but not cost an arm and a leg.
I asked her if she had seen a lot of shows and she said that she used to come to New York with her husband but since he passed away a few years ago she just didn't feel up to making the big trip by herself. Finally her daughter who had never been suggested that it was time to go again and what better way to spend her Birthday then with a trip to New York. The first show I suggested was Mamma Mia. Believe it or not they had seen the movie and hated it. That's a first for me. My next suggestion was Wicked but they had actually seen it in Chicago last year. Then I thought how about The Marvelous Wonderettes? Here is a brief synopsis of the show.
"The Marvelous Wonderettes is a cotton-candy colored, non-stop musical blast from the past! Featuring your favorite songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s ("Mr. Sandman," "Stupid Cupid," "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me," "Heatwave," and many, many more!), The Marvelous Wonderettes takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes – Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts and voices to match!"
So after telling them a brief description about the show and the fact that everyone in my office loved it, they knew it was the show for them. Not only that but I told them that I could get them great seats at at a discount. Well, that just made her day. Before wrapping up I asked her if she needed any restaurant recommendations and I was able to suggest over ten restaurant's that her and her daughter might like. It's calls like these that make me love what I do.
