If you got a chance to see the recent Tony Awards, acknowledging excellence in the Broadway theater, you may have noticed that Shrek The Musical was nominated for 8 2009 Tony Awards. Although they only won 1 award for Best Costume Design of a Musical (Tim Hatley received the honor), Shrek The Musical is one of the finest fun-filled shows you'll ever get to see on the Broadway stage. Mr. Hatley created the scenic design for the show as well.
For those of you familiar with the 3 Shrek films, this Shrek The Musical production stays true to the original stories. The book and lyrics have been written by David Lindsay-Abaire. And with lots and lots of jokes and fun stuff throughout for both kids and adults to enjoy. The shows music was written by Jeanine Tesori with direction by Jason Moore, choreography by Josh Prince and lighting design by Hugh Vanstone.
Shrek The Musical follows the adventures of Shrek, a "swamp-dwelling ogre" who is displaced from his home and makes a deal with the local ruler of his kingdom (Lord Farquaad). It is simply that Shrek needs to find Princess Fiona (played by Sutton Foster) and bring her back to the Lord so they can marry. If Shrek can accomplish this task then he will allow Shrek to live out his days in the home that he has come to love. Shrek, played by Brian d'Arcy James and his sidekick "Donkey", played by Daniel Breaker take the journey to bring Princess Fiona back. Pinnochio, played by John Tartaglia and all the fairy tale creatures that were also displaced by Lord Farquaad and made to live in Shrek's former home in the swamp, all try to help in their own way so everyone can go back to the way things used to be in their lives.
I can tell you that after seeing Shrek The Musical, I really thought it might become the show of the year in 2009. The show has everything it takes to please its audience. A great story, wonderful music, lots of laughter and one of the most talented group of actors ever to appear on a Broadway stage. And I've seen several hundred shows in my career in the theater ticket industry. Still, it seems that Billy Elliot, Next to Normal and God of Carnage are all in the running to become the most popular shows of the season.
