Rock Tuner Memphis Will Arrive at Broadway's Shubert Sept. 23

Applause Theatre Service has learned that the new Joe DiPietro-David Bryan rock musical Memphis will begin previews on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre, current home of the revival of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit, Sept. 23.

The racially fueled musical will open at the Shubert Oct. 19 and will feature direction by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) and choreography by Sergio Trujillo (Next to Normal, Jersey Boys). Tickets are now on sale.

"In the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50's," press notes state, "a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun fell in love with everything he shouldn't: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer. Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever."

Memphis played regional engagements at the La Jolla Playhouse and Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre this past season and received good notices.

Chad Kimball (Lennon, Good Vibrations, Into the Woods, My Life With Albertine) and Montego Glover (The Color Purple, Radiant Baby) starred in the recent engagements of the musical. Casting for the Broadway run will be announced at a later time.
Based on a concept by George W. George, Memphis features book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) and a score and lyrics by Bon Jovi's David Bryan. DiPietro and Bryan are also represented with the Off-Broadway musical The Toxic Avenger which is a big hit and everyone here in my office loved. So we shall see, it certainly has the makings of a hit!

The performance schedule follows: Tuesday through Saturdays at 8 PM, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.
