Now I'm really SAD!! One of my all time favorite musicals starring one of my favorite stars, Oliver Platt, is going bye bye!!
Des McAnuff's new Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls, the famous "Musical Fable of Broadway," will close June 14 after four months of performances at the newly refurbished Nederlander Theatre. Wow! This is a shocker!! Was it the poor performance at the Tony's where they lost the sound or was it just not selling?? I thought it was kind of holding its own.
Cast members were told June 9, two days after their appearance on the Tony Awards broadcast. The new production of the 1950 musical by Frank Loesser, Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling opened March 1 after previews from Feb. 5.
By close, the show will have played 28 previews and 113 performances.
The cast is headed by Oliver Platt (as Nathan Detroit), Lauren Graham (as Miss Adelaide), Craig Bierko (as Sky Masterson) and Kate Jennings Grant (Sarah Brown).
The show (nominated as Best Revival of a Musical in the 2009 Tony Awards) is based on characters and stories created by Damon Runyon, who, for this production, appears as a character who frames the action. Director McAnuff (Jersey Boys, The Who's Tommy) set his staging in the 1930s (around the time Runyon was writing) rather than the usual 1950s.
This revival is visually unique. A giant video wall is used to create filmic, animated backdrops for the show's settings. An animated seaplane is shown whisking characters to Havana, for example.
Guys and Dolls has music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. The classic score includes "Fugue for Tinhorns," "A Bushel and a Peck," "If I Were a Bell," "Adelaide's Lament," "I'll Know," "Guys and Dolls," "More I Cannot Wish You," "Luck Be A Lady" and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat."
Many consider it to be one of the perfect musical comedies for its lean storytelling and its character- and plot-rich songs.
If you haven't seen it, GO! Applause can get you in at a great price(below the normal face value!) with great seats! Call 800-451-9930
